CANONGATE
KIRKYARD
The
churchyard, resting place to many prominent parishioners,
shows most notably, a bronze medallion against the wall
facing the nave of the church.
This and the name Clarissa are the only identification of the famous mistress
to Robert Burns.
Incorportated into a monument to the Scottish Economist Adam Smith is a small,
scuplted portrait.
Scottish Poet, Robert
Fergusson (1751-74), who had a huge influence on Burns, occupies
a plot in front of the wall.
When Burns visted the grave in 1780, finding it in disarray, he commissioned
the present headstone and composed the fond tribute.
